Belphegor

Belphegor is an Austrian death metal/black metal band formed in 1991, initially using the name Betrayer (the current name has been used since 1993). Belphegor is, in Christianity, the name of a demon.

Although often associated with Satanism, the band’s members are atheists. They do not believe in the existence of gods or demons, but they use satanic symbolism as a rhetorical means of opposing religious culture.

The band presented their first demo Kruzifixion in 1991, in the same year, under the name ‘Belphegor’, they released a new demo, “Daemonolatria”, which is very difficult to find. Their first album, “The Last Supper”, was released by Lethal Records in 1995.

Last Episode and Phallelujah Productions (1997 – 2002)

The albums “Blutsabbath” (1997) and “Necrodaemon Terrorsathan” (2000) were recorded by Last Episode (now known as Black Attakk). After leaving the label and then calling them the “rip-off label”. They released a live album “Infernal Live Orgasm” on an independent label: Phallelujah Productions, and soon after signed with the Austrian record label Napalm Records.

To celebrate ten years of career, the band released a live album titled “Infernal live orgasm” in 2002. The album was released on the Phallelujah Productions label, founded by the band solely and exclusively for the release of this album. The band claimed that this decision was made because they wanted to have total control over the release of an album that they consider something special in their career.
Therefore, from the elaboration of the graphic part to the licensing and distribution, the album was produced and supervised by own band. Infernal live orgasm contains twelve songs, eight of which are live tracks, recorded at different performances between June 1999 and June 2001, and four more studio recordings, two recorded in December 2001, and two others taken from demos released at the beginning of the 1990s.

In 2003, Belphegor recorded “Lucifer Incestus” and opened a tour throughout Europe. In 2005 they presented Goatreich-Fleshcult, and in the same year they played at the X-Mass Festival. The band separated from Napalm on the grounds of not being sufficiently supported by this label.

Nuclear Blast (2005 – 2009)

After signing with the Nuclear Blast label in 2005, the band released the album Pestapokalypse VI in October of the following year. They were hired to open for Danzig on the American tour of Blackest of the Black in December 2006, returning four months later to America along with the bands Unleashed, Krisiun, and Hatesphere. They also played at the famous Wacken Open Air festival. In September they toured with Gorgoroth in several countries in South America.

2008 was the year of the release of “Bondage Goat Zombie”. In January, after eye surgery, Sigurd was replaced by Morluch. For some time it remained unknown whether Sigurd would return to the band, until Helmuth clarified that the guitarist had decided to leave permanently. The band played again in the US in early 2008, played at the Hellfest festival in France in June 2008 and accompanied Nile and Grave on the Ithyphallic tour.

The band released their eleventh album,”Totenritual”, on 15 September 2017.

In April 2022, the band announced their twelfth album, “The Devils”, would be released on 24 June. The album’s release date was then pushed back twice due to manufacturing delays for 8 July, and then to 29 July 2022.

Daniela Fraga our partner saw them live in Belo Horizonte in 2022 in a tour to promote their last album and she says it was a help of a show, no pun intended.
