Lamb of God

These guys produce very distinctive music, an aggressive blend of Groove and Death Metal with poignant, memorable lyrics.
Lamb of God is an American Metal band formed in 1994. The band from Richmond, Virginia, was originally called Burn the Priest but quickly changed their name in 1994 after their self-titled debut album.

Lamb of God is composed of vocalist Randy Blythe, two guitarists, Mark Morton and William Adler, bassist John Campbell, and drummer Art Cruz. They are part of the New Wave of American Heavy Metal; however, some also classify some of their work as “Groove Metal
Lamb of God has seven studio albums, one live album and three DVDs. The band’s sales exceed two million dollars in the United States alone. In 2007, they received a Grammy nomination for their 2006 album Sacrament.

They have already taken part in major tours such as Ozzfest and Slayer’s The Unholy Alliance Tour in 2006. They have also participated in major concerts such as Download Festival in the United Kingdom, Soundwave and Gigantour.

Its main themes are religion, politics, misery and personal themes. The band’s name means Lamb of God, leading many to believe they are a Christian band. According to the members, the name Lamb of God is nothing more than sarcasm, as their lyrics address questions and criticisms about religion, one of the most recurring themes in their songs.

In July 2019, drummer Chris Adler took to his social media to speak openly about his departure from the band: “…. I didn’t leave the dream. I didn’t decide to leave my life’s work. I wish my brothers all the best in their ongoing endeavours. I can guarantee you will hear from me again…” Chris then spoke about the motorcycle accident he suffered in 2017, which some believe was the reason for his departure from the band: “Many asked about a motorcycle accident I had in Thailand in 2017. Indeed, it wasn’t pretty, but I’ve been fine since August 2018. Thank you for your concerns…”

At another point, the drummer hints that he is no longer exactly satisfied with playing with the band he had been part of since the beginning: “There is an ambiguous concept in our world where what matters is selling. I can’t define that outside of my understanding, but I know that getting stuck in a “creative” formula and/or playing the same song 10,000 times hasn’t reinforced my love for playing…”

In 1994, guitarist Mark Morton, drummer Chris Adler and bassist John Campbell started a band called Burn the Priest. The band members knew each other from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. Morton left the band shortly after its inception to receive his master’s degree. Adler and Campbell replaced Morton with Abe Spear. The band rehearsed at the Adler House and around Virginia for five years. In 1995, the band released their self-titled first demo. After the demo, Burn the Priest recorded two split albums with Agents of Satan and ZED, respectively. After the band’s first three demos, Burn the Priest added vocalist Randy Blythe to their lineup.

In 1997, Morton returned to the band. Two years later, the band released their self-titled debut album, Burn the Priest, through Legion Records. Mikey Brosnan of Legion Records helped with $2,500 for the recording and promoted it around Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, through DIY shows.
The album was produced by Today Is the Day guitarist and vocalist Steve Austin. Spear left the band, opening a position for guitarist. Chris Adler’s brother, Willie Adler, became the band’s second guitarist a year later, and the contract with Prosthetic Records was signed. After being banned from playing at certain venues (with some venue owners believing the band had a “bad name”), Burn the Priest changed their name to Lamb Of God.

On May 1, Lamb Of God announced their new DVD, Walk with Me in Hell, to be released on July 1, 2008. The DVD is a double disc with almost five hours of footage, containing the documentary Walk with Me in Hell and several extra live performances from the Sacrament world tour. At the end of the documentary Walk with Me in Hell, the members state that they are more excited than ever to write new material.

In August 2008, it was announced that the band had begun work on the follow-up album and that its release was scheduled for February 2009. Josh Wilbur was also named as the producer for the recording of the new album. They also went on tour with Metallica starting in December 2008.

The recording process for the new album was made available for live viewing via the band’s website, with two webcams installed in the studio (specifically in the drum room and mixing room).

Their latest album, Wrath, was released on February 23, 2009, internationally via Roadrunner Records on February 24, 2009, in America via Epic Records. The album is dedicated to Mikey Brosnan, who helped them get started in Philadelphia, PA. In November 2008, Brosnan was killed by a drunk driver. Drummer Chris Adler said, “Without Mikey, we wouldn’t be the band we are today.” Drummer Chris Adler said, “This album will surprise many people. Normally, bands that get to where we are in our career start to loosen up, smell the roses and regurgitate. We choose a different path. No one wants to listen to another member of the band. I’m hyping a new album. “Wrath” doesn’t need that. We have ourselves, and on February 24th, you’ll feel it.” With that said, “Wrath” debuted on the Billboard 200 at number two, selling over 68,000 copies in its first week.

With the album “Wrath”, the band, in spring 2009, began the first leg of their world tour; No Fear Energy Tour speaks for itself, with main support from Children of Bodom and opening shows with God Forbid and Municipal Waste. The tour was a huge success for the band, with rave reviews and great returns at each show. The band played in Europe in the summer with Metallica on the World Magnetic Tour, together with Mastodon, while playing some of their own shows and performing at major European festivals. With six days left in the tour, Unearth guitarist Buz McGrath replaces Mark Morton, as he left early to be with his wife and first child.

Lamb Of God was also announced to serve as Metallica’s direct support for the North American leg of their 2009 world tour. It ended the year with some shows in Australia and New Zealand, with Shadows Fall and DevilDriver.

The band released their new single “Hit The Wall” in 2010; the new album would be released in February 2011; however, they postponed the release until 2012.

In 2021, their song “Ghost Shaped People” was named by Loudwire as the 28th best metal song of 2021
